We saw Dr Park this morning and he was pleased with the range of movement in Daniel's feet and legs following the surgery on Tuesday. He would like to see a video of Daniel's mobility in six months, and said that ideally he would like Daniel to return for follow-up in a year. He advised on how we should help Daniel's progress and one of the main things is, of course, "lots of walking".
Daniel has been off of his feet since the surgery on Tuesday and his tendons and hamstrings are still sore, and so we headed into therapy afterwards a bit apprehensively . Michael the therapist stretched Daniel's legs and within minutes the extension and straightness that could be achieved in both legs was already significantly better than before. It appears that the lengthening procedure has been very successful, and Daniel's flexibility will continue to improve through regular stretching.
Later in the session Daniel did some standing from a seated position while he was supported by Michael, and he also stood up for as long as possible with his hands positioned on a bench in front of him.
On Friday we have therapy again at 8am and we fly out in the sfternoon.
To the casual observer Daniel's mobility now may not look radically different to six weeks ago, but in fact there have been major positive changes from both operations that have got him to a state where he can make really big improvements in mobility as he gains strength. He does not have the involuntary tightness in his legs that he had before, and his feet and legs have a much greater range of movement, which is critical to smoother and more comfortable walking. He is using his leg muscles in a different way now and as they strengthen over a few months it will be extremely interesting to see what Daniel can achieve.
